I know a lot of people here liked Newgrounds back in the past, but I don't really like Newgrounds back in the past because its games and animations were so violent. Some today are still violent, but the size of it is smaller. But apart from the violence, I think these games are masterpieces (even though I haven't played them all and have never seen Newgrounds before).

You have to consider: The internet is rather "new". ;)
In "the past" most people on the internet were either total nerds or teenagers and young tweens. "Naughty content" was not always welcome on NG and teenagers tend to be a rowdy crowd, so it was a lot of violence.
Plus: 'A sea of blood' is easier added to a video than a deep and intricate story. ;)
